Robin Risser of RC Lens has emerged as a surprise candidate for the role. The 21-year-old has enjoyed an excellent campaign between the posts. His recent award as the best goalkeeper in Ligue 1 has strengthened his case for selection.
The young shot-stopper could beat more experienced rivals to the position. Lucas Chevalier, Alphonse Areola and former captain Hugo Lloris are also options for Deschamps. Lloris, now 39 years old, has been linked with a possible return to international duty.
