VfL Wolfsburg midfielder Patrick Wimmer says the entire club is struggling to accept their relegation from the Bundesliga. The Wolves dropped to the second tier after losing a tense play-off against SC Paderborn on Monday night.

Wimmer watched from the sidelines as injury kept him out of both matches. He spoke to Sky Germany about the mood inside the camp. He said every player and supporter shows shock on their faces. He added that the dressing room feels empty.

The 24-year-old believes the team needs time to understand what went wrong. He said each person knows the scale of what has just happened.

The match became difficult for Wolfsburg when defender Joakim Mæhle got a red card after just 14 minutes. However, Wimmer refused to blame his colleague.

According to the Associated Press, Wimmer said Mæhle feels terrible about the incident. The Austrian explained that the Dane knows the tackle should not have happened. But he does not think the squad should attack one player.

Wimmer praised Mæhle for his performances this term. The defender returned from a shoulder injury and played well throughout the campaign. Wimmer admitted the red card was unfortunate. He also noted that the whole team looked tired during the game.

The Austrian international joined Wolfsburg in 2022. He has spent two seasons with the German side.
