Tottenham Hotspur have set their sights on Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali. The London club wants to bring the Italian midfielder to their squad this summer.
Manager Roberto De Zerbi sees Tonali as the perfect player to control the centre of the pitch. The coach believes the 24-year-old has the technical skills to lead Spurs’ new style of play.
Newcastle do not wish to sell their key player. Tonali’s contract runs until 2029. There is no release clause in his deal. This means the Magpies can demand a very high transfer fee.
Other big clubs have shown interest in the past. Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United have all watched Tonali. However, these clubs are now chasing different targets.
Tottenham have already started their summer work. They have signed defenders Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson on free transfers. The club also wants Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke.
Spurs face another issue with young defender Luka Vuskovic. Brighton have offered £30 million for the teenager. The player wants to move, but Tottenham may reject the bid.
The club also needs a new winger to replace Heung-Min Son. They have failed to sign Bryan Mbeumo and Antoine Semenyo. Manchester City’s Savinho is now on their list.
De Zerbi also wants another striker and possibly a new goalkeeper. Guglielmo Vicario might return to Italy. Juventus are interested in the keeper.
The move for Tonali shows De Zerbi has power in the transfer market. It also shows Spurs are ready to spend money to improve the team after a difficult season.
