- Thomas Tuchel commends Kane’s defensive work rate and Bellingham’s team mentality
Thomas Tuchel has hailed the performances of Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham following England’s thrilling 4-2 triumph over Croatia in their opening World Cup fixture. The Three Lions began their Group L campaign in Texas with an impressive display that saw them respond to two equalisers before sealing the win.
Kane, the England captain, delivered a masterclass in leadership by scoring two first-half goals. These strikes brought his tally to 10 World Cup goals, matching Gary Lineker’s record for the national team. However, it was not just his attacking prowess that caught the eye of the manager. Tuchel singled out a crucial defensive moment in the dying stages when Kane threw his body in front of a shot from Josko Gvardiol to protect the lead.
“When you observe the dedication of our skipper, of our number nine, during extra time, blocking a vital shot following a set-piece with his entire body, you understand everything about his display today,” Tuchel explained. “It was a complete showing. An absolute leader. He gives everything. Physically and mentally. He possesses the full package currently. He desires success and leads through his actions.”
Bellingham, who won his battle with Morgan Rogers for the attacking midfield role, justified his selection with a goal early in the second period. The Real Madrid star also entered the history books as the youngest European footballer to feature in four separate major tournaments.
Tuchel noted a significant shift in the 22-year-old’s attitude, highlighting his willingness to adapt to the team’s needs rather than playing as an individual. “You can depend on Jude during these occasions. He thrives under pressure. It brings out his finest qualities,” the manager stated. “The difficult choice was informing Morgan Rogers he would not start, as he merits a place. Jude proved highly dependable and worked hard to be an excellent team member.”
Marcus Rashford came off the bench to replace Anthony Gordon and scored the final goal, ending a run of 15 matches without finding the net for his country. The Manchester United forward, who rediscovered his form during a loan spell at Barcelona, received special encouragement from Tuchel to maintain his drive.
“Marcus keeps pushing and training at the highest standard,” Tuchel added. “I am delighted he found the net. I urged him to remain hungry for the next opportunity. He has been outstanding throughout the past 17 days.”
The victory places England at the top of Group L. They will face Ghana in their next match as they aim to continue their winning start to the tournament.
