Frankfurt open negotiations
Eintracht Frankfurt have made initial contact with Derby County to ascertain the potential transfer fee for goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström. The Bundesliga side are actively seeking a new shot-stopper after enduring an unreliable campaign from their current options.
Neither Kauã Santos nor Michael Zetterer managed to establish themselves as consistent performers between the posts for Frankfurt last season. Their struggles prompted the club hierarchy to prioritise the goalkeeping position following the appointment of Adi Hütter as the new head coach.
Zetterström has emerged as a viable target following his displays for Derby County and the Swedish national team. The 27-year-old featured for Sweden at the World Cup, enhancing his reputation as one of Europe’s emerging goalkeeping talents at a time when goalkeepers typically enter their peak years.
Premier League competition intensifies
Frankfurt face significant competition for the Swedish international’s signature. Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers have both registered scouting interest in Zetterström as they assess their own goalkeeping options ahead of the new season.
The Championship keeper’s situation has attracted attention from top-flight clubs across two major European leagues. While Frankfurt have taken the proactive step of contacting Derby directly to discuss terms, the Premier League duo remain active in monitoring developments and could yet formalise their interest with offers.
Contract situation offers financial advantage
The timing of Frankfurt’s approach appears calculated. Zetterström’s contract with Derby County enters its final year within days, potentially allowing interested clubs to negotiate from a position of financial advantage rather than meeting a premium valuation.
Rather than risk losing the goalkeeper on a free transfer next summer, Derby may be compelled to consider offers that reflect his diminished contractual status. This scenario presents Frankfurt, Leeds and Wolves with the possibility of securing an established international goalkeeper at a reduced fee compared to the current market rate for players with longer agreements.
However, uncertainty persists regarding Zetterström’s prospective role should he move to Germany. It remains unclear whether Frankfurt view him as a genuine candidate for the number one position or as squad depth to challenge existing options. Hütter has yet to publicly clarify his goalkeeping preferences, leaving the hierarchy at the German club unresolved as pre-season preparations approach.
The coming weeks will likely prove decisive as the three clubs weigh up their formal bids for the Derby keeper.
