Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Khalis Merah is expected to be sidelined for approximately one month after suffering a sprained ankle. The injury occurred during a collision in training and threatens to rule the teenager out of the club’s crucial Champions League qualifying fixture.

Champions League Qualification at Risk

The timing of the setback could hardly be worse for Paulo Fonseca’s side. Lyon are scheduled to contest the first leg of the Champions League third qualifying round on either 4 or 5 August, a fixture that Merah now looks likely to miss.

Further medical assessments will determine the exact date of his return, though initial reports suggest the French Under-20 international faces around four weeks on the sidelines.

Breakthrough Campaign

The injury interrupts a promising trajectory for the 19-year-old, who established himself as a first-team regular during the 2025-26 campaign. Merah made 32 appearances across all competitions last season, registering one goal and two assists.

The Meyzieu-born player, who recently took the number 18 shirt, had spent his summer break prioritising physical conditioning over rest in an effort to impress the coaching staff. He remains contracted to Les Gones until June 2029.

Squad Depth Tested

Merah’s absence leaves Fonseca with a selection headache in midfield ahead of the European campaign. Having earned two caps for France at Under-20 level, the youngster had been tipped to play a significant role in Lyon’s qualification push.

The club will now await updates on his rehabilitation programme before confirming his availability for subsequent fixtures.
