Julian Nagelsmann has resigned as head coach of the German national team following the country’s elimination from the World Cup. The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed the departure, bringing an end to the 37-year-old’s tenure after the team’s tournament disappointment.
Nagelsmann, who previously managed Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim, revealed that he spent several days considering his position before reaching his decision. “I’ve done a lot of thinking in the days since our elimination and have consulted with trusted individuals both personally and within the federation. The decision was anything but easy for me,” he stated.
The manager emphasised that his choice was motivated by the team’s best interests rather than personal considerations. “My top priority has always been the team’s success. After such a bitter disappointment, they deserve the chance for a fresh start,” Nagelsmann explained.
Acknowledgements and Regrets
In his departing remarks, Nagelsmann extended gratitude towards his coaching staff, the DFB, and the players for their dedication during his time at the helm. He offered particular thanks to Germany’s supporters, expressing regret that the team could not deliver success on the global stage.
“A special thank you also goes to the fans. You carried us, you trusted us, you gave us energy, even during difficult times. It truly pains me that we disappointed you and couldn’t give you any more memorable nights of football at this World Cup. You deserved so much more,” he said.
Backroom Exodus
The departure extends beyond Nagelsmann himself. Assistant coaches Benjamin Glück and Benjamin Hübner have also stepped down from their positions with the national team and will exit alongside the head coach, leaving the DFB with significant gaps to fill in the technical staff.
The Search for a Successor
The DFB now faces the task of identifying a new head coach to lead the team into the next international cycle. Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has emerged as the leading candidate to take over the role, according to multiple media reports.
