Didier Deschamps has described Michael Olise as “one of the best players in the world” following the winger’s outstanding creative displays at the World Cup. The France coach revealed that the Bayern Munich attacker overcame a “difficult” start to his international career to become a pivotal figure in Les Bleus’ tournament campaign.

Olise has provided five assists in five appearances at the World Cup, establishing himself as the team’s primary creative force ahead of Thursday’s quarter-final against Morocco. The 22-year-old’s remarkable consistency in the final third has helped France navigate the knockout stages despite the coach’s admission that his integration into the senior squad was initially challenging.

Olympics hangover to international excellence

The winger made his France debut in September 2024, featuring in a 3-1 defeat to Italy shortly after representing his country at the 2024 Olympics. Deschamps acknowledged that the transition from Olympic duty to the senior team presented early obstacles for the former Crystal Palace prospect.

“When he first joined us with the national team after the 2024 Olympics, things were a little difficult for him,” Deschamps explained in an interview with Sport Bild. “But through perseverance and great support, he has become one of the best players in the world.”

Deschamps emphasised Olise’s tactical importance to the current France setup, identifying him as the crucial connection between midfield and attack. “He is our link between the finishers up front and the teammates behind him,” the manager stated, highlighting how the player’s vision and technical ability have transformed the team’s attacking dynamics.

Morocco test awaits in-form creator

Thursday’s quarter-final meeting with Morocco represents the latest examination of Olise’s rapid development at the highest level. His five assists place him among the tournament’s most influential players, with France relying on his creativity to unlock a disciplined Moroccan defence.

The Bayern Munich star’s journey from a struggling debutant to world-class talent within months underscores the rapid progress that has marked his first season in Germany. As France seek to advance beyond the last eight, Olise’s ability to maintain his prolific assist rate could prove decisive against opponents who have proven difficult to break down in previous rounds.
