Newcastle United have struck a £51.5m deal to bring Switzerland international Johan Manzambi to the Premier League from Freiburg. The agreement is in place, but the 20-year-old midfielder will not complete the switch until Switzerland’s World Cup campaign concludes.
Manzambi, who has caught the eye with his performances in the tournament, is currently nursing a minor knee problem. Switzerland manager Murat Yakin remains uncertain whether the player will recover in time for Sunday’s quarter-final against Argentina.
Steur arrives from Ajax
While the Manzambi transfer waits on international duty, Newcastle have finalised the £23m capture of Sean Steur from Ajax. The 18-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year contract after leaving the Dutch club.
Steur arrives with a growing reputation as one of the most promising midfield prospects to emerge from the Amsterdam academy in recent years. He represents the second major midfield addition of the window for the Tyneside club.
Guimarães future uncertain
Despite the incoming traffic, Newcastle face potential unrest over Bruno Guimarães. The Brazil midfielder has grown unsettled following the recent exits of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham and Anthony Gordon to Barcelona.
Arsenal retain an interest in Guimarães, though they have not yet tabled a formal bid. Newcastle maintain publicly that the 28-year-old is not for sale. However, sources suggest a proposal in the region of £75m could force the Magpies to reconsider their stance, particularly if the player pushes hard for a move to North London.
What happens next
Newcastle’s business now hinges on two external factors: Switzerland’s progress in the World Cup and Arsenal’s next move for Guimarães. Manzambi’s medical and personal terms are settled, but the transfer cannot be registered until his national team is eliminated. Meanwhile, the club hopes fresh contract talks might persuade Guimarães to remain, though much depends on whether a substantial offer materialises from the Gunners.
