Bosnia and Herzegovina international Nikola Vasilj is set to join Saudi Pro League newcomers Al-Diriyah on a free transfer, bringing his five-year association with FC St. Pauli to a definitive close.

The 30-year-old goalkeeper has reportedly agreed a two-year contract with the newly-promoted Saudi side following the successful completion of a medical examination, according to reports from Bild and Hamburger Morgenpost.

St. Pauli spell concludes

Vasilj departs the Hamburg-based club after his contract expired, a decision confirmed following St. Pauli’s relegation from the Bundesliga. The Bosnian spent five seasons with the club, accumulating 167 appearances across all competitions and establishing himself as a dependable figure during their campaigns in the second and top tiers.

His arrival in 2019 marked the beginning of a significant chapter for both parties. Vasilj played a key role in St. Pauli’s eventual promotion to the Bundesliga, though their stay in the top flight lasted only one season. With the club returning to the second tier, the goalkeeper opted not to extend his stay, instead seeking a new challenge abroad.

International pedigree

Vasilj’s move to Saudi Arabia comes on the back of an impressive international tournament showing. He started all four of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s matches at the recent World Cup, demonstrating his reliability on the global stage before the side were eliminated by co-hosts the United States in the round of 32.

That tournament experience, combined with his 167 appearances in German football, makes him a significant acquisition for Al-Diriyah. The club earned promotion to the Saudi Pro League ahead of the new campaign and are actively strengthening their squad to meet the challenges of top-flight competition.

Saudi switch

Al-Diriyah have secured Vasilj’s services without paying a transfer fee, capitalising on his free-agent status. The two-year deal offers the goalkeeper a fresh start at a crucial point in his career, while providing the promoted club with an experienced shot-stopper capable of marshalling their defence during their debut season among Saudi Arabia’s elite.

The transfer reflects the continued appeal of the Saudi Pro League for established European-based players seeking new opportunities. For Vasilj, the switch represents a departure from German football after half a decade and a chance to compete in a league that has increasingly attracted international attention.
