Brighton secure Vušković in €53m Tottenham deal
Brighton & Hove Albion have announced the signing of Croatian defender Luka Vušković from Tottenham Hotspur for €53 million. The teenager arrives on the south coast after spending last season on loan at Hamburger SV, where he established himself as one of the standout performers in the 2. Bundesliga.
The completed transfer extinguishes any remaining hopes at HSV of securing the centre-back’s services for the upcoming campaign. The German club had been eager to retain Vušković either through another temporary arrangement or a permanent acquisition, but Brighton have instead activated the move to bring him into the Premier League.
Hürzeler welcomes talent but urges patience
Brighton head coach Fabian Hürzeler, who joined from FC St. Pauli last summer, expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition while cautioning that the young defender will require time to adjust to the demands of English football.
“Luka has had a fantastic start to his career – we have been closely following his progress,” Hürzeler said. “Last season he proved that he can play at a very high level, and we want to support him in building on that in our environment.”
The German tactician emphasised the need for realistic expectations, adding: “There was a lot of hype surrounding his move to us, but he is still a young player who needs time to adapt to the demands of Brighton and the Premier League.”
Significant outlay ends HSV hopes
The €53m fee marks a substantial investment for Brighton as they continue to reshape their squad under Hürzeler’s leadership. For Hamburger SV, the departure of a key loanee from the previous campaign represents a significant setback as they prepare for the new 2. Bundesliga season without one of their most reliable defensive options.
Vušković becomes the latest young talent to join the Seagulls’ evolving defensive unit. His experience in German football during the previous campaign should prove valuable as he transitions to the physical and tactical demands of top-flight English football.
The Croatia youth international will link up with his new teammates during pre-season as Brighton prepare for their forthcoming Premier League campaign.
