RB Leipzig have secured the services of French defender Maxime Estève from Burnley, the Bundesliga club confirmed on Friday. The 24-year-old centre-back moves to Germany for a reported fee of €25 million and has agreed a five-year contract that runs until June 2031.
Estève arrives in Leipzig following a challenging campaign with Burnley, where he featured prominently despite the club’s immediate return to the EFL Championship. The defender made 36 appearances across all competitions last season, including 34 in the Premier League, starting the vast majority of matches as the Lancashire side struggled to maintain their top-flight status.
The Frenchman originally joined Burnley on loan from Montpellier HSC during the second half of the 2022-23 campaign. He subsequently made that transfer permanent and played a key role as the club secured promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt, boasting the division’s strongest defensive record. However, with Burnley dropping back into the second tier after just one season, Estève has opted to continue his career at the highest level in Germany rather than remain at Turf Moor.
RB Leipzig represent a significant step up in competition for the former France youth international. The Saxony-based club have established themselves as consistent top-four finishers in the Bundesliga and regular participants in the UEFA Champions League. Estève will hope to solidify their defensive options as they prepare to compete on multiple fronts in the upcoming campaign.
The transfer concludes Estève’s two-and-a-half year association with Burnley, during which he made the transition from Ligue 1 prospect to experienced Premier League campaigner. His departure leaves the club with defensive rebuilding work to do as they aim for an immediate return to the top flight.
For Leipzig, the acquisition addresses squad depth at centre-back and adds a player with proven top-flight experience across two major European leagues. Estève will compete for starting minutes alongside established defenders as the club seeks to maintain its challenge for domestic honours and progress in European competition.
