Cagliari are reportedly close to securing the services of Southampton right-back Yukinari Sugawara, with a deal agreed for a loan move that includes an an option to make the transfer permanent for €5.5 million.
The Japan international is now expected to travel for medical tests, a crucial step before the deal can be finalised.
Sugawara’s Journey to Serie A
Sugawara, who recently turned 26, joined Southampton in 2024 from AZ Alkmaar for a fee of €7 million. He spent the entirety of last season on loan at German club Werder Bremen, where he made 31 competitive appearances. During his spell in Germany, the versatile defender contributed significantly, providing six assists.
Before his loan, Sugawara featured for Southampton in 35 games, registering one goal and one assist. He is also a part of the Japan national squad, having been included in the team for the most recent World Cup held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. His ability to play as a right-back, in a more advanced wide role, or even as a central defender offers tactical flexibility.
Cagliari’s Busy Transfer Window
The potential acquisition of Sugawara highlights Cagliari’s active approach in the current transfer market. The Serie A club has already secured another loan deal, bringing Yanis Massolin from Inter. That agreement also includes an option to buy, along with a buy-back clause for Inter.
Furthermore, Cagliari are reportedly set to bolster their midfield options by signing free agent Roberto Gagliardini, indicating a concerted effort to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
