Aston Villa have completed the signing of Swiss midfielder Johan Manzambi from SC Freiburg for a club-record fee of €70 million. The transfer was confirmed on Friday evening, with the 20-year-old heading to the Premier League fresh from representing Switzerland at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The move marks a significant financial gain for the Bundesliga outfit, who developed the player through their esteemed academy system. Manzambi arrives at Villa Park having been named the Europa League’s Young Player of the Season last term, a notable achievement given that Freiburg lost to Aston Villa in the final of that competition.

Freiburg’s Record Sale

The €70 million fee establishes a new benchmark for outgoing transfers at Freiburg. The German club had previously received €25 million for both Kevin Schade and Merlin Röhl, meaning Manzambi’s sale nearly triples their previous record.

Sporting director Jochen Saier acknowledged the significance of the departure. “The shared journey from the U-19s to the Europa League final was special for both Johan and us,” he stated. “After truly intensive talks and negotiations [with Aston Villa] in recent weeks, both sides benefit from the solution found.”

From Final Foe to Team-Mate

Manzambi’s performances in the Europa League proved decisive in attracting Villa’s interest. He played a key role in Freiburg’s unexpected run to the final, demonstrating creativity and composure against experienced continental opposition. Despite his side’s defeat in the showpiece, his individual brilliance did not go unnoticed by the eventual victors.

The 20-year-old progressed from Freiburg’s U-19 setup to the senior squad, making the journey that Saier referenced in his farewell comments. His development culminated in the Europa League final appearance against his new employers, where his talent was displayed on one of continental football’s biggest stages.

The midfielder now joins the very team that denied him European silverware, linking up with the Villa squad ahead of the new campaign. His arrival significantly strengthens the club’s options in the centre of the park as they prepare for another season competing on both domestic and European fronts.

The deal represents another statement of intent from the Midlands club, who continue to invest heavily to maintain their position among England’s elite. For Manzambi, the transfer offers an opportunity to test himself in one of world football’s most demanding leagues while reuniting with the club that ended his European dreams just months earlier.
