Manchester United have completed the £48m signing of midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea. The 22-year-old Brazil international becomes manager Michael Carrick’s first acquisition since taking charge at Old Trafford.

The deal addresses an urgent need for reinforcements in United’s midfield, which has been depleted by Casemiro’s departure and the long-term injury to Manuel Ugarte. The club has also secured Belgium captain Youri Tielemans for £35m to bolster the engine room.

A Rare Rival Acquisition

Santos arrives from a Chelsea side that finished seven places and 19 points behind United last season, where he often featured as a backup player. He previously gained valuable experience during a loan spell at Strasbourg in Ligue 1.

Transfers between England’s “big six” clubs remain uncommon. In the 13 years since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down, United have signed only four players from their elite rivals: Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic and Mason Mount from Chelsea, plus Alexis Sánchez from Arsenal.

Passing Precision and Defensive Solidity

The Brazilian offers a blend of defensive awareness and distribution that could complement Kobbie Mainoo. While Mainoo provides creativity, Santos brings greater physical combativeness and positional discipline.

Statistically, the 22-year-old excels in possession. He completed 89.9% of his passes during the last Premier League campaign, rising to 80% when playing the ball forward. Only three midfielders who played regularly achieved greater accuracy on forward passes. His completion rate for passes into the final third stood at 82.2%, ranking sixth among midfielders.

Santos also demonstrates composure under pressure, completing 86.5% of passes when harried by opponents, significantly higher than Casemiro’s 80.4%. He averaged 8.1 line-breaking passes per 90 minutes, placing him behind only 11 midfielders in the division alongside established performers such as Martin Ødegaard and Bruno Guimarães.

Out of possession, Santos wins 62% of his duels, a rate bettered by only three midfielders last season. However, his pressing volume remains modest at 53.7 pressures per 90 minutes, suggesting United may still require a more energetic runner to protect against transitions.

Future Development

At 22, Santos offers significant potential for growth compared to the 29-year-old Tielemans. His development during the Strasbourg loan, where he thrived in a box-to-box role, suggests he can adapt to Carrick’s tactical demands.

The Brazilian’s ability to link play through short exchanges—averaging 1.8 successful layoffs per 90 minutes—should help United navigate high-pressing opponents. Supporters will hope he forms a productive partnership with Mainoo while adding the steel that Casemiro provided.
