Antony has revealed that he rejected a personal approach from Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany during last summer’s transfer window, opting instead to join Real Betis for deeply personal reasons. The 26-year-old Brazilian forward subsequently enjoyed an impressive La Liga campaign in Spain, registering eight goals and six assists as he rediscovered his form following a difficult period in his career.
The Bayern approach
The winger admitted that the German champions were keen to secure his signature, with Kompany taking the unusual step of contacting him directly. Speaking to Bild, Antony acknowledged the honour of the approach from one of Europe’s most storied clubs.
“It was, of course, a huge honour. I have great respect for Bayern Munich and for Vincent Kompany as well. He’s a coach I admire greatly,” Antony said. “When a club like Bayern shows interest in you and the manager personally calls you, it means a lot to any player.”
Personal happiness over prestige
Despite Bayern’s interest and the opportunity to compete for major honours in the Bundesliga, Antony elected to move to Seville, explaining that his decision was driven by personal circumstances rather than purely sporting considerations. The winger revealed he was navigating a challenging period in his life and prioritised his emotional wellbeing and family happiness above all else.
“It was a decision I made together with my family. At that point, I was going through a difficult period in my life and needed a place where I could be happy again, not only as a footballer but also as a person,” he explained. “I felt that Real Betis was exactly the right club for me. That’s why I don’t regret that decision at all.”
Bayern’s alternative pays dividends
While Antony flourished in Andalusia, contributing eight goals and six assists in La Liga, Bayern Munich secured an alternative target to bolster their attacking options. The Bavarian club eventually completed the signing of Luis Díaz from Liverpool, and the Colombian enjoyed a stellar debut season in Germany.
Díaz found the net 25 times in all competitions, proving a prolific presence as the Rekordmeister lifted further silverware and maintained their domestic dominance. The success of both players suggests the decisions suited all parties, with Antony rediscovering his best form in a supportive environment while Bayern’s investment in Díaz delivered immediate goalscoring returns.
