AS Monaco have entered negotiations with CD Cruz Azul regarding midfielder Erik Lira as they look to strengthen their squad, though any transfer depends on the departure of current striker Folarin Balogun.

According to reports, no agreement has yet been reached between the Ligue 1 side and the 26-year-old Mexico international. The Principality club must first finalise the sale of Balogun before they can progress with Lira’s recruitment.

Balogun exit holds up Lira deal

Balogun, 25, is currently in discussions with three clubs regarding a potential move away from Monaco. Tottenham Hotspur are understood to be among the interested parties vying for the United States international’s signature.

The forward’s departure appears to be a prerequisite for Monaco to free up resources and squad space to accommodate Lira. This procedural bottleneck means the Mexican midfielder’s future remains in limbo despite advanced negotiations between the clubs.

World Cup pedigree and domestic success

Lira has established himself as a prominent figure in Mexican football since joining Cruz Azul four and a half years ago from UNAM Pumas. The defensive midfielder represented Mexico at the World Cup, making four appearances on the global stage.

Last season proved particularly productive for the 26-year-old, who made 45 appearances across all competitions for the Mexico City-based club, starting 41 matches and scoring once. His consistent performances helped Cruz Azul secure two additional trophies, cementing his reputation as one of the league’s reliable performers.

Monaco’s midfield reshuffle

Monaco’s interest in Lira forms part of a broader restructuring of their midfield options. The club recently sanctioned the transfer of Aladji Bamba, 20, to Newcastle United, while fellow midfielder Lamine Camara, 22, is also highly sought-after and could depart.

These potential exits have elevated Lira’s status as a priority target for the French side, who view him as a key addition to bolster their engine room ahead of the new campaign. The Mexican’s experience at both club and international level makes him an attractive proposition to fill the void left by the departing talents.

With Balogun’s situation unresolved, however, Lira must wait before any move to the Stade Louis II can materialise. The coming days will prove crucial in determining whether Monaco can clear the necessary hurdles to secure their man.
