Strasbourg secure Chelsea loanee
RC Strasbourg Alsace have officially completed the season-long loan signing of goalkeeper Filip Jörgensen from Chelsea FC. The 24-year-old Danish international arrives at Stade de la Meinau to fill the vacant goalkeeping position left by Mike Penders, whose own temporary spell from Stamford Bridge concluded at the end of last season.
Penders, aged 21, had served as the club’s loanee goalkeeper during the previous campaign. Strasbourg have now turned to Jörgensen to maintain their defensive options, continuing their relationship with the Premier League side for goalkeeping reinforcements.
The deal was formally announced after administrative complications caused a brief delay. French publication L’Équipe reported that Jörgensen had been waiting in France since Thursday for the necessary paperwork to be processed, though these issues have now been resolved.
Pre-season struggles prompt defensive action
The arrival comes amid urgent concerns within the Strasbourg defence. The club has endured a difficult summer preparation period, conceding 20 goals across just five friendly fixtures. This record has placed immediate pressure on new head coach Hugo Oliviera, who is tasked with organising a backline that has shown significant vulnerability ahead of his first competitive campaign in charge.
Jörgensen effectively replaces Penders and will be expected to provide greater stability between the posts. The Danish stopper arrives with the immediate responsibility of addressing the concession rate that has characterised the club’s warm-up matches.
Immediate competitive demands
Jörgensen is set to be available for selection on Saturday when Strasbourg face Newcastle United in their final pre-season friendly. This fixture offers a brief opportunity for the goalkeeper to build chemistry with his new defensive colleagues.
There will be minimal time for gradual adaptation. Strasbourg’s Ligue 1 season begins less than a week later with a challenging away fixture against Olympique de Marseille on Friday, 21st August. The rapid turnaround demands that Jörgensen settles quickly if he is to help rectify the defensive frailties that have plagued the side during the summer months.
