Coventry City have announced the signing of Swiss centre-back Aurèle Amenda from Eintracht Frankfurt. The newly-promoted Premier League club confirmed the transfer on Thursday evening, with the deal reported to be worth €20m.
Eintracht Frankfurt bid farewell to the defender through a club statement. Markus Krösche, board member for sport, said: “We’d like to thank Aurèle for his commitment in an Eintracht Frankfurt shirt. He always conducted himself with professionalism and always put the team first. We wish him all the best for the future, both in his sporting career and in his private life.”
Lampard’s defensive reinforcement
The 22-year-old becomes a significant addition to Frank Lampard’s squad as Coventry prepare for their first top-flight campaign since the 2000/01 season. Amenda arrives with substantial continental experience, having established himself with 24 Bundesliga appearances for Frankfurt during the previous campaign.
His consistent displays in Germany earned recognition at international level. Amenda was named in Switzerland’s squad for this summer’s World Cup, although he did not feature during the tournament finals. This national team selection underlines the calibre of player Coventry are attracting as they look to compete against England’s elite.
Ambitious return to the top flight
The reported €20m investment signals Coventry’s determination to establish themselves in the Premier League following more than two decades outside English football’s highest tier. The fee represents a significant outlay for the club, reflecting the urgent priority placed on strengthening defensive options ahead of a demanding schedule.
Amenda brings a combination of youth and valuable top-flight continental experience to the Midlands. Lampard will view the Swiss international’s arrival as crucial depth for a squad facing the physical and technical demands of Premier League football.
The confirmed transfer concludes a swift progression from initial reports in late June to completed deal. Amenda’s presence is expected to bolster a back line that will face immediate tests against established Premier League attacking talent when the season commences.
