Barcelona have confirmed an agreement to sell left-back Jofre Torrents to Ajax, structuring the deal to retain both financial and sporting interests in the 20-year-old defender. The operation is valued at up to €5 million and includes a repurchase option plus a 50 per cent share of any future transfer fee for the Catalan club.

From Loan to Permanent Transfer

The Dutch side initially approached Barcelona regarding a loan at the end of last season, viewing temporary relocation as ideal for Torrents’ development after he broke into the senior squad. However, negotiations evolved into a permanent transfer that nonetheless protects Barcelona’s long-term interests. The arrangement reflects manager Hansi Flick’s continued belief in Torrents’ potential, with the German coach reportedly insisting on repurchase rights rather than losing the La Masia graduate outright.

Torrents made his senior debut during the 2025/26 campaign, featuring four times for the first team after impressing on the club’s preseason tour of Korea and Japan. His La Liga bow came on the opening day against Mallorca. Despite this breakthrough, regular opportunities at Camp Nou proved difficult to secure.

Competition for Places

Alejandro Balde remains the established starter at left-back, while João Cancelo is expected to return to the squad from Manchester City. Gerard Martín has also provided cover, occasionally featuring at centre-back, leaving Torrents facing limited minutes in either the senior side or Barça Atlètic in Spain’s fourth tier.

Torrents started Barcelona’s final preseason friendly against Birmingham City at left-back, selected partly due to Balde’s injury and Martín’s deployment in central defence. That appearance underlined both his capability and his status as surplus to immediate requirements once the senior squad returns to full strength.

Amsterdam Bound

The move to the Eredivisie represents a significant step up in competition level compared to the Segunda Federación. At Ajax, Torrents will join former Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen as the Dutch club rebuilds under manager Míchel.

Financially, the deal provides Barcelona with a net accounting benefit of up to €5 million while maintaining a pathway to bring Torrents back should he fulfil his potential in Amsterdam. The structure offers the defender immediate playing opportunities without severing ties to his boyhood club entirely.
