Hansi Flick has made Raphinha Barcelona‘s interim captain for the start of the 2026-27 season, tasking the Brazilian with leading a provisional group alongside Eric García and Pedri.
The German manager has opted to delay the definitive captaincy vote until the first-team squad is completely settled, with further transfers possible before the window closes. Raphinha will consequently carry the armband for Wednesday’s Gamper Trophy fixture against Al Ahly and will address the Camp Nou crowd before kick-off, stepping into the breach while the club awaits full clarity on its senior personnel.
Leadership Vacuum Prompts Temporary Fix
The temporary measure follows significant changes to the dressing room hierarchy. Marc-André ter Stegen and Ronald Araujo both departed this summer, removing two experienced figures from the previous captaincy order. With Frenkie de Jong—normally next in line for the armband—sidelined by a medial collateral ligament injury sustained at the World Cup, Barcelona lacked an obvious candidate to assume the role during pre-season.
Flick explained to the club’s official media that he prefers to wait until the squad is finalised before players cast their votes for the permanent leadership structure. OneFootball reports that the manager was explicit this is a temporary measure, noting that De Jong could still outrank the Brazilian in the later ballot once he returns to fitness.
Permanent Hierarchy Taking Shape
Despite the provisional nature of the current arrangement, reports indicate Raphinha is the leading candidate to become Barcelona’s first captain once the vote is held. De Jong is expected to be named second captain, with Pedri, Gavi and Eric García completing the leadership group.
The Brazilian has previously worn the armband during his time at the Catalan club and has consolidated his influence through his personality and commitment. Should he be confirmed as first captain, the position would acknowledge the leadership he has cultivated within a squad that blends established players with emerging talent.
Barcelona are expected to conduct the definitive captaincy vote nearer to the close of the summer window. Until then, Raphinha will lead the side into the competitive campaign, beginning with the traditional season curtain-raiser against the Egyptian side.
