Besiktas sporting director Onder Ozen has confirmed the Turkish club’s interest in signing Dusan Vlahovic, though he accepts the Serbian striker is likely to favour a move to one of Europe’s top-five leagues.
Vlahovic became a free agent on 30 June after allowing his Juventus contract to expire, making him available without a transfer fee. The forward’s status has attracted interest from across the continent, but Ozen recognises that Besiktas face a significant challenge convincing him to choose the Turkish Super Lig over more established footballing destinations.
Italiano connection offers hope
A potential advantage for the Istanbul club lies in their dugout. Besiktas head coach Vincenzo Italiano previously managed Vlahovic at Fiorentina, where the forward enjoyed the most prolific campaign of his career to date. Ozen noted that Italiano maintains occasional contact with the player, who retains considerable respect for the coach.
Despite this existing relationship, Ozen admitted that financial and sporting considerations may ultimately outweigh personal bonds. He suggested Vlahovic is expecting a substantial contract and the opportunity to compete in the Champions League, criteria that typically favour clubs in Europe’s elite divisions.
Salah pursuit abandoned
Parallel to their Vlahovic interest, Besiktas have terminated their pursuit of Mohamed Salah. Ozen revealed that the club held three meetings with the former Liverpool forward and presented their sporting project, but withdrew from negotiations after deeming his financial demands excessive.
The sporting director specifically cited commission fees among the costs that violated the club’s strict principles, confirming that Besiktas will not improve their existing offer. Reports also suggested the demands included a significant percentage of jersey sales revenue.
With the Salah route closed, the Turkish side have turned their attention to AC Milan winger Rafael Leao as an alternative target to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new season.
