PULSER FOOTBALL NEWS-1

Australian Sports Group (ASG) has taken control of Canberra United, ending two years of uncertainty for the two-time A-League Women champions. The Australian Professional Leagues (APL) confirmed the transfer of the licence from Capital Football, which had withdrawn its financial backing.

From survival to expansion

Canberra United were the only standalone women’s team operating across the A-Leagues. Following Capital Football’s decision to stop funding the club, the ACT government kept the side afloat for the past two seasons while the APL sought new ownership.

ASG’s acquisition secures the club’s immediate future and includes an exclusive option to establish an A-League Men side in the capital for the 2028/29 campaign. Theo Fotopoulos, chief executive of ASG, said the group was “thrilled to be leading the next generation of professional football in Canberra.” He described the capital as “home to a thriving football community” with a “huge participant and passionate supporter base.”

League relief after prolonged uncertainty

The lengthy search for a backer had drawn criticism from within the squad. Captain Michelle Heyman had previously voiced frustration at the delay, highlighting the pressure on players operating without long-term security.

APL chair Stephen Conroy welcomed the resolution, calling it “an exciting next step for professional football in the ACT.” He added that the deal “highlights the growth opportunity for the A-Leagues and football in Canberra.” Conroy also thanked the ACT government and local supporters for sustaining the club through the transition period.

What happens next

With ASG committed to a “renewed focus on growth and investment,” attention now turns to the potential integration of a men’s team. If activated, the 2028/29 option would see Canberra join the expanding roster of A-League Men franchises, creating a unified professional club structure in the territory for the first time.
