Cesc Fabregas has dismissed suggestions that Como are rushing to complete a late deal for a striker, refusing to be drawn on persistent rumours linking Moise Kean with the Serie A club.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s season opener away to Udinese, the Como coach insisted his squad cannot afford distractions as they embark on a historic campaign that will see them compete in three competitions simultaneously for the first time.

Fabregas said the team must avoid losing focus over whether a new forward arrives before kick-off. He pointed to defensive reinforcements already secured, highlighting the signing of Chalobah as evidence of their market activity. The former midfielder noted that identifying suitable centre-backs is difficult despite knowing “all the centre-backs from the last two years.”

New season, new challenges

Como return to Serie A with ambitions extending beyond survival. This season marks uncharted territory for the Lombardy club, who will feature in the Champions League alongside domestic league and Coppa Italia commitments.

Fabregas described the European campaign as “a gift” but stressed the importance of domestic fixtures. He acknowledged the club has shown “nice progression” yet emphasised that survival remains the priority, adding that the team begins with a clean slate and will face fixtures every three days.

The former Arsenal and Chelsea star also criticised the transfer window remaining open after the season begins. He admitted he dislikes conducting business once competitive action starts, though he accepts the reality of the situation.

Fitness concerns and fresh faces

Fabregas faces a selection dilemma regarding Nico Paz. The midfielder remains doubtful for the Udinese fixture after experiencing muscle tiredness during pre-season. The coach explained that Paz could have featured for 45 minutes in recent friendly matches but they opted not to take risks. He suggested the Argentina youth international might still feature against Udinese.

The Como manager reserved special praise for Mattia Liberali, who rejected a return to Milan in favour of joining from Serie B side Catanzaro. Liberali impressed during pre-season encounters against Arsenal and Liverpool, with Fabregas describing him as “an exceptional lad.”

Fabregas expects Como’s younger players to embrace increased responsibility throughout the demanding season ahead. He stated they have “no choice” but to step up to the challenges of competing on three fronts.
