The German Football Association (DFB) has confirmed holding constructive talks with Jürgen Klopp regarding the vacant head coach position with the national team. DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke travelled to New York for initial in-depth discussions with the former Liverpool manager about taking charge of the side.

According to a statement released by the governing body, the parties reached an understanding on the key terms of a potential contract during the meeting. Both sides have expressed confidence that negotiations can ultimately be concluded successfully, though this remains subject to reaching a formal agreement with Klopp’s current employer.

While German media reported that the parties had reached an agreement in principle on a contract until 2030, the DFB statement stopped short of confirming specific durations, noting only that an understanding on key terms had been achieved.

The Germany job became available following Julian Nagelsmann’s departure after the national team’s disappointing round of 32 exit to Paraguay at the World Cup. Nagelsmann stepped down from his position in the wake of that elimination, leaving the DFB to search for a high-profile replacement capable of leading the side through the upcoming international fixtures.

Klopp is currently employed by Red Bull as their Head of Global Soccer, having taken up that role following his departure from Anfield. However, securing his release from Red Bull is not expected to present significant obstacles to the DFB’s pursuit.

Further talks between the association and Klopp are scheduled to continue next week. The DFB noted that any potential contract would require ultimate approval at a joint meeting of the Supervisory Board and the Shareholders’ Assembly of DFB GmbH & Co. KG before being finalised.

The development marks significant progress in the DFB’s attempts to appoint one of the most decorated managers in modern football. Klopp secured Premier League and Champions League titles during his tenure at Liverpool, and would bring extensive experience at the highest level of club football to the international setup if the appointment is completed.
