Appointing Jürgen Klopp as Germany head coach remains a work in progress despite senior officials rating the likelihood of a deal at better than even odds.

DFB vice president Hans-Joachim Watzke has confirmed the former Borussia Dortmund manager is the German Football Association’s “plan A” for the vacant position. However, the official stressed that negotiations face significant stumbling blocks before any contract can be signed.

‘Hurdles to overcome’

Speaking to German broadcaster ZDF, Watzke delivered a cautious assessment of the situation. “This is not a done deal yet. There are still hurdles to overcome,” he said. Watzke, who previously worked alongside Klopp at Dortmund, added: “I’m convinced the chances are higher than 50%, but that doesn’t mean it’s 100%.”

The comments suggest that while both parties are keen to reach an agreement, practical issues continue to delay the appointment. Watzke’s involvement is particularly significant given his close working relationship with Klopp during their time together at Dortmund.

Financial limitations

A major sticking point appears to be the DFB’s restricted budget. Watzke acknowledged that the association operates within strict financial limits.

Instead, officials hope national pride will help close the gap. Watzke said he expects a “slight ‘patriotism discount'” from Klopp, noting: “I know that he loves Germany.”

What happens next

The DFB must resolve outstanding contractual issues before Klopp can officially take charge. Watzke indicated that progress depends on finding solutions acceptable to both sides, though he noted that “Jürgen’s willingness to solve these problems is a significant help.”

Should the appointment proceed, it would mark Klopp’s first role in international management and his return to German football following his successful spell at Dortmund.
