Enzo Fernández demonstrated his big-game temperament by scoring Argentina’s equaliser in their World Cup semi-final triumph over England, yet the Chelsea midfielder’s future at Stamford Bridge remains increasingly uncertain.
The Blues are prepared to consider offers for the 25-year-old this summer, with Real Madrid maintaining an interest despite publicly denying any approach earlier this month. Chelsea have set an asking price of £120m for the Argentinian, who arrived from Benfica for £106.7m shortly after the 2022 World Cup.
Madrid interest persists despite denials
Real Madrid have emerged as potential suitors as they seek to fill the creative void left by the departures of Luka Modrić and Toni Kroos. The club have already acquired Marc Cucurella from Chelsea this summer, and while they issued a statement denying interest in Fernández, reports suggest the reigning European champions retain a firm interest in the midfielder.
The Bernabéu hierarchy will take particular notice of Fernández’s performances at the tournament, especially with Argentina set to face Spain in Sunday’s final. A commanding display against the host nation’s midfield could strengthen Madrid’s resolve, though the £120m valuation represents a significant obstacle.
Strained relations at Stamford Bridge
Fernández’s relationship with the London club has been tested in recent months. He was handed a two-match ban by Chelsea following a clash at the end of last season, contributing to the uncertainty surrounding his position under new manager Xabi Alonso. The former Benfica player has struggled to replicate his international form consistently in the Premier League, though he did score 12 goals last season through expertly timed runs into the box.
The midfielder also faced scrutiny after being filmed participating in a racist chant about the France team following Argentina’s 2024 Copa América victory. He subsequently apologised for the incident, but the episode strained relations with some Chelsea teammates.
World Cup pedigree
Fernández first announced himself on the global stage at the 2022 tournament in Qatar, where he was named young player of the tournament. He came off the bench to score a crucial goal against Mexico during the group stage and has since developed into a leader for Lionel Scaloni’s side.
Against England in Atlanta, he dominated possession with 104 touches and a 98% pass completion rate, capping his performance with a bending 25-yard strike in the 85th minute. However, he also displayed the combative side of his game with an early clash that went unpunished, highlighting the dual nature of a player who can dictate play but occasionally struggles defensively when opponents run past him.
Whether Fernández remains at Stamford Bridge or secures a move to Madrid may ultimately depend on his showing in the final and whether Chelsea’s hierarchy can reconcile their valuation with the player’s occasionally turbulent tenure in west London.
