Fiorentina have reached a verbal agreement with Real Madrid to sign teenage defender Víctor Valdepeñas, though the transfer faces a potential delay as the Spanish club consider whether to retain the player for pre-season assessment under new coach José Mourinho.

According to Sky Sport Italia transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, the Serie A side have struck a provisional deal for the 19-year-old, who operates as either a centre-back or left-back. The agreement would see Valdepeñas join on a permanent basis, with Real Madrid securing a 50 per cent sell-on clause as part of the arrangement.

Timing Remains Uncertain

Despite the verbal agreement, the transfer’s completion remains subject to crucial timing negotiations. Real Madrid are reportedly weighing whether to sanction the move immediately or retain Valdepeñas for several weeks to allow Mourinho to evaluate him during pre-season training. The Portuguese manager was recently appointed and has yet to fully assess the depth of his defensive options.

This uncertainty leaves Fiorentina awaiting confirmation of when, or indeed if, the player will arrive in Florence. The Italian club have completed the structural aspects of the deal but cannot finalise the transfer until Real Madrid determine their pre-season requirements.

Player Profile and Deal Structure

Valdepeñas has yet to make a senior appearance for Real Madrid’s first team but has featured for their reserve sides. His versatility across the defensive line offers tactical flexibility, allowing him to fill multiple roles in the back four.

The inclusion of the 50 per cent sell-on clause indicates Real Madrid’s confidence in the player’s potential future value, ensuring they would benefit financially should Fiorentina profit from a subsequent transfer. This structure represents a compromise between allowing the player to develop elsewhere and maintaining a stake in his future.

Fiorentina’s Defensive Overhaul

Valdepeñas would represent Fiorentina’s fifth addition of the summer window. The Florence-based club have already secured defenders Viery, Radu Dragusin and Alex Jimenez, plus midfielder Arthur Atta, as they significantly rebuild their squad ahead of the new campaign.

This aggressive recruitment strategy suggests substantial changes to the defensive unit. The potential arrival of Valdepeñas would provide additional competition for places, particularly given his capacity to cover both central and wide positions.

The clubs remain in contact to resolve the timing issue, with Fiorentina hopeful of securing the player’s services before the transfer window closes. However, Real Madrid’s final decision rests on Mourinho’s assessment needs during the upcoming pre-season period.
