Gianluigi Buffon has rejected an offer to rejoin the Italy national team setup, according to reports. The legendary goalkeeper declined a position under recently appointed technical director Paolo Maldini, electing to extend his break from the sport rather than take an immediate return.
Club Italia Role Declined
Maldini, who recently assumed his duties at the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), had approached Buffon about a hands-on role within Club Italia. This organisation manages the national team across all age groups. The position would have seen the 47-year-old working directly with players and staff throughout the system.
Buffon previously served as Italy’s delegation chief but resigned in March following the Azzurri’s play-off final defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina. That loss confirmed Italy would miss a third consecutive World Cup tournament. He stepped down alongside former FIGC President Gabriele Gravina and fellow Italy great Gennaro Gattuso.
Family Focus Over Immediate Comeback
The former Juventus stopper had only accepted the delegation chief role in late 2023 after ending his playing career. He has been out of work since early April.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Buffon carefully considered Maldini’s proposal but ultimately decided this is not the appropriate moment to resume his career. He plans to continue spending time with his family while studying for a future position in management or as a sporting director.
Buffon remains Italy’s record caps holder and was a member of the 2006 World Cup-winning squad. His experience and popularity made him an attractive candidate for Maldini as the federation seeks to restore confidence following the qualification failure.
Head Coach Hunt Continues
The rejection adds to Maldini’s workload as he also hunts for a new head coach. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti have both been ruled out of contention, leaving Andrea Pirlo among the frontrunners for the vacant position.
