Early Morning Traffic Stop
Sassuolo winger Cristian Volpato is under investigation in Australia after allegedly testing positive for cocaine during a roadside police stop in Sydney. The incident took place in the early hours at approximately 1:10am local time on Friday morning while the 22-year-old was enjoying his summer break in his home city of Sydney, located in the Australian state of New South Wales.
According to reports, officers stopped Volpato after allegedly clocking his BMW Coupe travelling at 109 km/h, a speed nearly 50 km/h above the designated limit for that area. The vehicle was pulled over in the early hours of the morning, and following the speeding violation, police administered a roadside drugs test. This initial screening allegedly returned a positive indication for cocaine use, triggering the requirement for secondary laboratory analysis.
Secondary Testing and Licence Suspension
Following the initial positive indication, authorities collected a secondary sample for laboratory analysis to confirm the roadside result. This secondary testing forms a crucial part of the evidentiary process in Australian traffic law, with the sample sent for detailed forensic examination before any potential charges are considered.
Volpato has not been formally charged with any criminal offence at this stage, as investigators await the confirmed laboratory results. The 22-year-old maintains his presumption of innocence while the secondary sample undergoes testing. However, he has already faced immediate administrative sanctions. His international driver’s licence has been suspended for six months, a penalty that prohibits him from legally driving in New South Wales during that period. The suspension applies specifically to his international permit, effectively banning him from operating any vehicle in the state while enquiries continue.
International Career Context
The incident comes at a sensitive time in Volpato’s international career. Born and raised in Sydney to Italian parents, the winger progressed through Italy’s youth system, earning caps at under-19, under-20 and under-21 levels for the Azzurri. He represented Italy through multiple age groups before making his decision to switch.
He recently switched his international allegiance back to Australia just before the beginning of the 2026 World Cup campaign, becoming eligible to represent the country of his birth in the upcoming qualifiers. This change of national team represented a significant career decision for the 22-year-old, who had previously committed to Italian youth football at multiple levels.
