Jonathan David faces a fight to remain at Juventus despite a productive World Cup campaign with Canada, while national teammate Ismael Koné begins a lengthy rehabilitation following surgery.
The Canadian forwards experienced contrasting fortunes during the 2026 World Cup, which the North American nation co-hosted before exiting in the Round of 16. David struck three times in five appearances, netting a hat-trick during the 6-0 victory over Qatar in the second group stage match. Koné, however, sustained a severe leg injury during the same fixture and has since undergone an operation that will sideline him for several months.
Uncertain futures in Serie A
David completed his first season in Turin after arriving as a free agent from Lille, yet the 26-year-old struggled to cement his place in the starting line-up. He registered eight goals across 46 appearances in all competitions and was unable to capitalise fully on an injury absence suffered by Dusan Vlahovic during the latter stages of the campaign.
Despite his international form, the striker’s position appears precarious. Luciano Spalletti is reportedly eager to refresh Juventus’s attacking options and wishes to sell both David and Lois Openda, according to multiple Italian outlets including Gazzetta. However, David wishes to remain in Turin and compete for his place.
Both David’s contract with Juventus and Koné’s agreement with Sassuolo are set to expire in June 2030.
Koné’s breakthrough halted
Prior to his tournament-ending blow, Koné had enjoyed an encouraging debut Serie A season. The 24-year-old midfielder scored six goals in 36 matches across all competitions and was instrumental in helping Fabio Grosso’s newly promoted Sassuolo side secure comfortable survival.
The injury is expected to shield Koné from transfer speculation during the current window, allowing the player to focus entirely on recovery. David, conversely, must wait to discover whether Spalletti will grant him the opportunity to prove his worth in pre-season.
David spoke warmly of his international colleague following Koné’s injury, saying: “Koné means everything to this team. If you ask the same question to any guy on this team, they will tell you the same. He is someone that we love a lot.”
Juventus are expected to continue their squad restructuring under Spalletti, with the coach determined to implement his preferred tactical approach ahead of the new campaign. For David, the coming weeks will prove decisive as he attempts to convince the management to retain his services rather than sanction a transfer.
Koné’s absence will be felt by Sassuolo as they prepare for their second consecutive top-flight season, though the club have indicated they will support the midfielder throughout his rehabilitation process.
