Serie A side Monza have tabled a formal offer to sign Derby County goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom just four days before the Italian league season is due to begin. The proposal, valued at €2.5 million plus half of any future transfer fee, comes as manager Ivan Juric looks to strengthen his squad before the campaign opener.

The 28-year-old Swedish international has attracted significant attention following an impressive showing at the recent World Cup. Standing at 1.97 metres, he was handed the number one jersey by national team coach Graham Potter and earned particular praise for his display against France during the knockout rounds.

Rapid rise from Sweden to England

Zetterstrom joined Derby only last August, arriving from Swedish club Djurgarden on a contract that runs until 2027. During his debut season in the Championship, he made 33 appearances between the posts and has already featured twice for the Rams in the current campaign.

Despite his relatively brief stint in English football, the keeper’s stock has risen considerably on the international stage. His displays in the summer tournament have clearly convinced Monza that he possesses the quality to compete at a higher level, despite having played just one full season outside his native Sweden.

Goalkeeper competition and deal structure

The Italian club already have Thiam and Pizzignacco available as senior goalkeeping options, yet they appear willing to add further depth to their squad. The financial package on the table reflects Monza’s belief in Zetterstrom’s potential resale value, with the 50% sell-on clause suggesting they view this as both an immediate sporting addition and a long-term investment.

For Zetterstrom, the move would represent a significant step up in his club career. Derby currently compete in the Championship, whereas Monza are preparing for another season in Italy’s top flight, offering the Swede a chance to test himself against some of Europe’s elite attackers.

With the Serie A transfer window still open and the season starting imminently, negotiations would need to progress swiftly if the transfer is to be completed. Derby must now decide whether to accept the bid and search for a replacement, or retain their established first-choice keeper as they pursue their own promotion ambitions.
