FC Nantes are weighing the dismissal of head coach Michel Der Zakarian just two matches into their Ligue 2 season following a pair of defeats that have left the club at the foot of the table.
The former Ligue 1 side, who dropped to the second tier in May, opened their campaign with a 1-0 home loss to Red Star before suffering a 2-1 reverse against Laval. A costly error from defender Tylel Tati contributed to the latter defeat, leaving Les Canaris without a point and casting serious doubt over Der Zakarian’s future. The club had targeted an immediate return to the top flight by 2027, but they now occupy bottom spot in the second division.
Promotions Past Offer No Protection
Der Zakarian’s current predicament contrasts sharply with his historical success at La Beaujoire. The manager previously led Nantes to Ligue 1 promotions in 2008 and 2013 during two distinct spells, establishing himself as a reliable figure for engineering top-flight returns. His appointment for a third stint was intended to replicate those achievements following relegation, yet the disastrous start has considerably weakened his standing with the board.
Kombouaré Linked with Return
Club officials have identified Antoine Kombouaré as the preferred candidate to replace Der Zakarian should they proceed with a change. The 62-year-old remains a popular figure in Nantes following his successful second spell, which included victory in the 2022 French Cup.
Kombouaré’s third tenure proved brief, ending with last season’s relegation, though he subsequently demonstrated his capabilities by steering Paris FC to safety before departing to make way for Liam Rosenior.
Obstacles to Appointment
Securing Kombouaré’s services may prove challenging. The experienced coach reportedly intends to take a short break from management, potentially forcing Nantes to reconsider their timeline or alternative options.
With the season still in its infancy, the coming days represent a critical juncture for the French club as they determine whether to maintain faith in Der Zakarian or attempt to lure Kombouaré out of his planned sabbatical to salvage their promotion ambitions.
