OGC Nice are closing in on the signing of veteran Belgium international Axel Witsel. The 37-year-old midfielder is available as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Spanish side Girona FC.
The move comes as a direct response to an injury crisis in the centre of the park. Laurent Abergel, who arrived from FC Lorient earlier this summer, suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a pre-season friendly against Cagliari last week. The setback leaves the Frenchman facing several months on the sidelines, forcing manager Olivier Pantaloni to seek urgent reinforcements.
Contract Terms and Medical
According to reports, Witsel has reached an agreement with the Ligue 1 club over a one-year deal that includes an option for an additional 12 months. The former Borussia Dortmund and Atlético de Madrid player could arrive in Nice as early as Monday to complete his medical examination.
The Belgian brings substantial top-level experience to the French Riviera. He featured regularly for Girona last season and was recently part of the Belgium squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup under manager Rudi Garcia.
Alternative Approaches
Before settling on Witsel, Nice had explored other options to fill the void left by Abergel. Johann Lepenant of Nantes was also under consideration by the INEOS-owned side, though the club have now prioritised the capture of the experienced defensive midfielder.
Season Opener Looms
The timing of the potential acquisition is crucial. Nice are scheduled to begin their Ligue 1 campaign against newly-promoted Lorient on Saturday. Pantaloni will be hoping to have his new signing registered and available before the opening fixture at the Allianz Riviera.
