Liam Rosenior is set to make a rapid return to French football only five months after departing RC Strasbourg, with the English coach expected to sign as Paris FC manager on Thursday.

The 41-year-old will replace Antoine Kombouaré at the Stade Jean-Bouin helm after negotiations between the incumbent and the Arnault-backed club reached an impasse. Rosenior is poised to commit to a two-year contract containing an option for an additional year, with formalities anticipated to conclude on his 42nd birthday.

Kombouaré exit paves way

Paris FC’s decision to pursue Rosenior follows the breakdown of talks with Kombouaré. The former Nantes manager had reportedly sought assurances regarding squad investment for the forthcoming season alongside an extension to his current deal, but the parties failed to find common ground.

The club consequently delayed their scheduled return to pre-season training on Wednesday to facilitate discussions with both candidates. This postponement suggests an imminent managerial transition as the club prepares for the new campaign without the manager who guided them through the previous term.

Circuitous route via England

Rosenior’s appointment marks his second managerial stint in France within a calendar year. He left BlueCo-owned Strasbourg to join Chelsea earlier in 2024, taking charge of the Premier League side before his departure after a brief tenure.

His return to Ligue 1 represents a notable shift in trajectory. While his spell at Strasbourg lasted only five months, it provided him with direct experience of French football’s competitive demands and cultural environment. Paris FC will hope this familiarity accelerates his integration compared to a manager arriving without local knowledge.

Immediate challenges await

Should the deal conclude as expected on Thursday, Rosenior will immediately assume responsibility for pre-season preparations. The delayed start to training indicates the new manager will need to rapidly assess his squad and establish working relationships with players currently awaiting clarity.

The Arnault investment group, which controls Paris FC, will require Rosenior to provide the sporting stability that proved elusive during the final phase of Kombouaré’s reign. His first task will involve resolving the uncertainty surrounding the playing group and determining which elements of the existing structure require reinforcement.
