Napoli have rejected multiple offers approaching €30 million for midfielder Antonio Vergara and are instead finalising a contract renewal that would significantly increase his salary and secure his long-term future.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, the Serie A side declined approaches from both domestic and foreign clubs without entering negotiations, despite bids edging towards the €30 million mark. The stance signals a clear intention to retain the young talent rather than sanction a lucrative departure.
Domestic Interest
Interest in Vergara had gathered momentum across Italy. Como initially viewed the player as a potential successor to Nico Paz, while Atalanta registered concrete interest as they sought midfield reinforcements. Roma were also tempted by the prospect of signing the midfielder, with reports suggesting they considered a €25 million valuation.
Despite the competition for his signature, Napoli dismissed all enquiries outright. The club has prioritised rewarding Vergara’s development with improved financial terms that reflect his rising status within the squad.
Allegri’s Influence
The proposed renewal represents a significant step up. Vergara currently earns approximately €400,000 per season, but the new deal would elevate his wages towards €1 million plus bonuses.
This commitment aligns with the vision of new head coach Massimiliano Allegri. The manager considers Vergara ready for the senior side and is reportedly planning a positional adjustment, envisaging the player in a new role as a central midfielder.
With negotiations at an advanced stage, Vergara appears set to compete for a first-team place under Allegri next season rather than seeking opportunities elsewhere. The decision to retain him suggests he will feature prominently in the coach’s plans.
