Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a medial ligament injury in his left ankle. The Borussia Dortmund centre-back sustained the damage during Saturday’s 2-1 group-stage victory over Côte d’Ivoire and faces an extended spell on the sidelines.
The 26-year-old was withdrawn at half-time in Winston-Salem after playing through discomfort during the first 45 minutes. Real Madrid’s Antonio Rüdiger replaced him for the second half as Germany secured top spot in Group E, with subsequent MRI scans confirming the severity of the ligament tear.
Conflicting Recovery Estimates
Medical assessments indicate differing recovery projections for the defender. Official German Football Association channels state Schlotterbeck will be sidelined for several months, while reports from Sky Germany and Bild suggest a timeframe of approximately two months. The discrepancy underscores the unpredictable nature of ligament rehabilitation, though both estimates confirm his tournament is over.
Despite the personal blow, Schlotterbeck will remain with the squad in the United States initially to support his teammates. Germany cannot call up a replacement player as the tournament has already commenced.
Nagelsmann’s Reaction
Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann acknowledged the defensive loss, stating: “Schlotti will be greatly missed on the pitch as an outstanding defender, especially for his excellent build-up play. This could have been his World Cup.”
Nagelsmann added that the defender’s decision to stay with the team was positive: “Yesterday we all tried to lift his spirits – fortunately he is a very positive character who is already looking ahead again. It is a good sign that he will initially remain here within the team, because he also has an impact off the pitch.”
Defensive Reshuffle
Rüdiger is now expected to step into the starting lineup alongside Jonathan Tah for the knockout stages. The pair had formed Germany’s central defensive partnership during the second half against Ivory Coast.
Nagelsmann expressed confidence in his remaining options, noting: “We are still very well covered at centre-back with Jonathan Tah, Antonio Rüdiger, Waldemar Anton and Malick Thiaw.”
Schlotterbeck becomes the third Germany player to suffer a tournament-ending injury, following Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry and midfielder Lennart Karl. The Borussia Dortmund defender had started both of Germany’s opening matches alongside Tah and scored their second goal in the 7-1 rout of Curacao.
Having already secured first place in Group E, Germany conclude their group campaign against Ecuador on Thursday. While the result carries no competitive consequence, the fixture offers Rüdiger and Tah valuable minutes to establish their partnership before the defending champions enter the high-stakes knockout rounds.
