Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed that Alejandro Grimaldo has completed his transfer to Atlético Madrid, with sporting director Simon Rolfes revealing the Spain international had verbally agreed to extend his contract before the Spanish club intervened.
Rolfes told Bild that the defender had shaken hands on a deal to keep him at the BayArena from 2027 until 2029, only for Atlético to disrupt those plans. The managing director for sport explained that the Madrid club’s approach changed the player’s mind, with reports suggesting the La Liga side paid approximately €25 million to secure his signature.
Contract reversal ends German stay
The turnaround marks a dramatic conclusion to Grimaldo’s three-year spell in the Bundesliga. The 30-year-old appeared set to commit his future to the German champions following a historic 2023/24 campaign in which he played a central role in securing an unbeaten league title and the DFB-Pokal.
During his time with Die Werkself, the left-back made 145 appearances, scoring 30 goals and registering 45 assists—remarkable attacking returns for a defender.
