Noah Katterbach has committed his future to Hamburger SV by signing a new contract, though the defender will spend the coming season elsewhere. The 25-year-old has joined 2. Bundesliga side Eintracht Braunschweig on loan for the 2026-27 campaign as he tries to restart a career slowed by fitness problems.
From Cologne loan to permanent deal
Katterbach’s time in Hamburg began during the 2022-23 season when he arrived on loan from 1.FC Köln. Impressed by his potential, HSV turned the temporary move into a permanent deal in January 2024, securing the left-back’s services on a full-time basis.
However, the move has not gone to plan. Injuries have severely restricted his playing time, limiting Katterbach to just 27 competitive appearances. In those matches, he scored once and provided three assists.
U-21 football during recovery
During his recovery periods, the defender played for HSV’s U-21 team in the Regionalliga to gain match practice. This willingness to play at fourth-tier level showed his commitment to returning to full fitness.
Sporting director Claus Costa praised this dedication when explaining the loan decision. “Noah hasn’t had an easy time with us over the past two and a half years,” Costa stated. “Nevertheless, it’s impressive how he fought his way back after setbacks and was also willing to support our U-21 team in the Regionalliga.”
Second-tier switch
Costa confirmed that regular football is the main goal for the player. “It’s important for Noah to get regular playing time again and find his rhythm,” he explained. “Therefore, we are happy to grant his wish for a change.”
The loan offers Braunschweig an experienced defender, while Katterbach gets the platform to rebuild his career after two difficult years in Hamburg. By extending his contract before allowing the temporary move, HSV have shown they still believe in his long-term value. The arrangement allows the player to regain match fitness and consistency, with the aim of returning to the Volksparkstadion as a stronger option for future seasons.
