Italy’s search for a new national team manager has taken a fresh turn with Raffaele Palladino emerging as a surprise contender for the position. The 42-year-old, who recently departed Atalanta following a disagreement over the club’s future direction, joins a growing list of names under consideration by the Italian Football Federation’s leadership.

Technical director Paolo Maldini and his advisor Leonardo have been entrusted with the crucial task of identifying a successor to Gennaro Gattuso. The pair are currently weighing up several tactical approaches as they look to appoint a figure capable of restoring the Azzurri’s competitive edge on the international stage.

Palladino’s Managerial Journey

Palladino has constructed his coaching reputation through a carefully managed progression across Serie A. He began his managerial career at Monza in 2022, earning praise for his work with the Lombardy side before securing a move to Fiorentina for the 2024-25 campaign. During his time in Tuscany, he guided the Viola to the semi-finals of the Conference League, demonstrating his ability to handle European competition.

His most recent appointment came at Atalanta, where he assumed control from Ivan Juric. Palladino successfully stabilised the Bergamo outfit, steering them away from relegation difficulty to secure qualification for the Conference League while also engineering a run to the Coppa Italia semi-finals. Despite these achievements, his tenure ended prematurely due to a dispute with the hierarchy over long-term strategic planning.

The former striker developed his tactical philosophy under the guidance of Atalanta’s long-serving boss Gian Piero Gasperini. Palladino adopted many of the intensive pressing and attacking principles that have defined Gasperini’s success, adapting them throughout his own evolving managerial style.

The Shortlist and Selection Criteria

While Palladino offers a modern, progressive option, Maldini and Leonardo are also evaluating more established candidates. Andrea Pirlo has emerged as a particularly strong alternative, bringing his own distinguished playing career and previous managerial experience to the table.

The panel have not discounted the possibility of turning to familiar faces. Both Roberto Mancini and Antonio Conte feature on the shortlist, with either former manager potentially offering the immediate authority and proven international track record that the federation may prioritise.

Timeline for Appointment

The decision ultimately rests with Maldini and Leonardo as they assess which candidate aligns best with the federation’s sporting project. Palladino’s current availability as a free agent following his Atalanta exit could expedite negotiations should the panel opt for the 42-year-old.

The appointment carries significant weight for Italian football as the national team seeks to establish a coherent identity and consistent results. An announcement is anticipated once the technical directors have concluded their comprehensive review of all potential candidates.
