Rennes Step Up Pursuit

Stade Rennais have opened negotiations with Sunderland over the transfer of forward Eliezer Mayenda, according to L’Équipe. The Ligue 1 club have identified the 21-year-old Spain youth international as a priority target as they seek to strengthen their attacking options ahead of their return to European competition.

Sunderland value the forward at €25 million. Mayenda is under contract with the English side until 2030, giving the club significant leverage in any potential deal. The long-term nature of his agreement means Rennes must pay a premium to secure his services this summer.

Forward Line Overhaul

The pursuit of Mayenda comes after Rennes secured the future of Esteban Lepaul. The forward, who finished as Ligue 1’s top scorer last season, had attracted strong interest from Napoli and Atletico Madrid. However, he committed his future to the Brittany club last week by extending his contract, ending speculation about a move abroad.

Despite retaining their main goal threat, Rennes face uncertainty elsewhere in their forward line. Breel Embolo, who is tied to the club until 2029, is no longer viewed as a first-choice option. This situation has accelerated the club’s search for additional attacking reinforcements as they prepare for the demands of competing on multiple fronts.

The club are determined to build a squad with sufficient depth to handle both domestic commitments and European fixtures. Adding Mayenda would provide greater tactical flexibility and allow for rotation without significantly weakening the starting eleven during a congested schedule.

Valuation Standoff

Mayenda represents the type of young talent Rennes have successfully developed in recent years. At 21, the Spain youth international offers potential for growth while providing immediate cover in the final third.

The €25 million asking price reflects Sunderland’s desire to retain their asset. With Mayenda contracted for another five years, the English club are under no pressure to sell and can demand a substantial fee.

Talks between the two sides are continuing, though no agreement has been reached. Rennes must decide whether to meet Sunderland’s valuation or seek alternative targets as they look to finalise their squad for the upcoming campaign.
