AS Roma have stepped up their pursuit of Crysencio Summerville by lodging a formal €46 million offer with West Ham United, according to reports in Italy. The bid represents a significant escalation in the Giallorossi’s campaign to secure the Dutch winger, who has reportedly already given his approval to the club’s project.

The development follows hours after head coach Gian Piero Gasperini appeared to cast doubt on the move, citing a strict salary ceiling designed to protect the squad’s wage structure. The coach insisted the limit was imposed “by choice, not because of the club’s means,” adding that Champions League qualifiers should not be immediately leapfrogged by new arrivals in the pay hierarchy.

Despite these reservations, Roma have pressed ahead with the substantial bid, which they expect will satisfy West Ham’s valuation. The club now awaits formal acceptance from the London side before attempting to finalise personal terms with the player.

Wage demands threaten to complicate deal

The primary obstacle remains Summerville’s contractual expectations. The 25-year-old is understood to be seeking between €6 million and €7 million per season, figures that would test the limits Gasperini referenced. Earlier negotiations had appeared to be progressing smoothly, but the salary issue has introduced significant friction into the discussions.

This uncertainty has kept Ajax’s Mika Godts firmly in the picture as a viable alternative. The 21-year-old Belgian would command a similar transfer fee to Summerville, yet his wage requirements align comfortably with Roma’s financial framework.

Godts presents younger option

Godts enjoyed a breakout campaign at the Johan Cruyff Arena last term, contributing 17 goals and 15 assists across 44 appearances in all competitions. His versatility across the forward line and four-year age advantage over Summerville offer compelling resale value and development potential.

With pre-season underway and a Champions League campaign looming, Gasperini has stressed the need for three or four quality additions to bolster his attacking options. The coming days will likely determine whether Roma can reconcile Summerville’s demands with their wage structure, or whether they pivot decisively toward the Ajax prospect.
