Rudi Völler will continue as the German Football Association’s sporting director through to Euro 2028. The decision to retain the German legend until the end of his current contract comes at the specific request of incoming manager Jürgen Klopp.

Sky Germany reports that Völler will maintain his position within the DFB hierarchy for the next three years. Klopp, who is poised to become the next Bundestrainer, has already held telephone discussions with Völler regarding their future collaboration.

The extension ensures continuity within the national team setup during a period of significant transition. Retaining Völler addresses potential concerns about losing institutional knowledge, while his familiarity with the federation’s operations should complement Klopp’s fresh perspective when the new manager eventually assumes control.

New York summit set for 10 July

Formal negotiations between the DFB and Klopp are scheduled to commence on 10 July in New York. These talks will focus on finalising the terms of Klopp’s appointment as Germany’s new head coach.

The meeting represents a crucial step in the managerial transition process. Both parties are expected to discuss the framework for Klopp’s tenure and his integration into the existing sporting structure.

Red Bull exit to follow

Klopp currently serves as Global Head of Soccer for Red Bull, a role he must vacate before taking charge of the national team. Conversations regarding his departure from the energy drink company’s football division will take place shortly after the New York negotiations conclude.

The sequence of meetings suggests Klopp’s appointment could be finalised within days, though his official start date with Germany depends on resolving his existing contractual obligations.

The timeframe extends Völler’s influence through to the European Championship in 2028, covering the remaining qualification campaigns and tournament preparations. His continued oversight provides the DFB with consistency as the new managerial era begins.

The arrangement positions Völler to work alongside Klopp once the former completes his transition from Red Bull to the international stage. Their early communication suggests an established rapport that could facilitate a smooth handover of sporting responsibilities.
