Milan chiefs are reportedly regretting their decision to snub Dutch striker Donyell Malen during the January transfer window. The former Aston Villa player has since become a revelation for AS Roma, spearheading their push for European qualification.

According to CalcioMercato, intermediaries offered Malen to the Rossoneri in winter. However, the club refused to commit to a deal worth around €27 million. That choice now appears costly.

Instead, Roma secured the Netherlands international on an expensive loan worth approximately €2 million. The agreement includes an obligation to buy should the Giallorossi secure Champions League or Europa League football next season.

The statistics make uncomfortable reading for Milan supporters. Malen has found the net 11 times and provided two assists in just 15 league appearances. He added another assist in the Europa League against Bologna.

The 26-year-old craved a role as an out-and-out centre-forward rather than a wide attacker. Under the Giallorossi manager’s direct, attacking system, he has thrived as the main striker.

By contrast, Milan’s January business proved disappointing. Sporting director Igli Tare operated with limited funds, and marquee signing Niclas Fullkrug has scored only once – against Lecce.
