Chelsea are poised to complete the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million, a deal that will make the England international the most expensive English player in history. The 23-year-old attacking midfielder has agreed terms on a six-year contract and is scheduled to undergo a medical on Monday.

The agreement represents a significant statement of intent from Xabi Alonso, who was appointed Chelsea manager in May. Arsenal had also expressed interest in Rogers and contacted Villa this month, but Chelsea have tracked the player’s progress for some time and moved decisively to secure one of the Spaniard’s priority targets ahead of the new season.

Rogers enjoyed a stellar campaign last season, scoring 14 goals and providing 12 assists across all competitions as Villa secured Champions League qualification and lifted the Europa League trophy. He has carried that form onto the international stage, starting on the right wing for England in their World Cup semi-final defeat by Argentina and creating the opening goal for Anthony Gordon.

Aston Villa signed Rogers from Middlesbrough for an initial £7 million plus £8 million in add-ons only 18 months ago in January 2024. The impending sale represents remarkable business for the Midlands club, who stand to make a substantial profit on a player who has rapidly established himself as one of the Premier League’s most coveted talents.

The £117 million fee eclipses Chelsea’s previous club record of £115 million paid for Moisés Caicedo in 2023. The West London club have financed the move through recent sales, having transferred Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid and Andrey Santos to Manchester United. Further funds could be generated if Enzo Fernández departs, with Madrid maintaining interest in the Argentina midfielder. Chelsea are also monitoring Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Maxence Lacroix.

For Villa, the record sale provides significant resources to reinvest in Unai Emery’s squad. The club have already sold Youri Tielemans to Manchester United and expect to conclude Lucas Digne’s transfer to Paris Saint-Germain. The departure marks the end of Rogers’ brief but impactful stint at Villa Park.

Once the medical is completed, Rogers will commit his long-term future to Stamford Bridge as Chelsea rebuild following a season without European football.
