Portuguese centre-back Antonio Silva is expected to complete a move to Bournemouth from Benfica within days, though the formal transfer paperwork will only be processed after the Lisbon club conclude their Europa League play-off commitments.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that the deal is “practically done” following an agreement between Silva’s representative, Jorge Mendes, and Bournemouth’s director of football Tiago Pinto. The two parties have reportedly shaken hands on the terms, clearing the way for the 22-year-old to switch to the Premier League once the final documentation is signed.
Milan link never materialised
Despite recent speculation connecting Silva with Serie A giants Milan, Romano has firmly dismissed those rumours. According to the journalist, Milan never established contact with Benfica regarding the defender’s availability.
Benfica did not receive a single call from Milan, Romano indicated, and no offer was made to either the club or the player.
The Rossoneri have instead addressed their defensive needs through alternative means, completing a €30m deal to sign Mario Gila from rivals Lazio earlier in the transfer window. This acquisition effectively ended any potential interest in Silva, allowing Bournemouth to progress with their pursuit unchallenged.
When the deal completes
Benfica are currently retaining all senior players until they face Swiss side St. Gallen in their Europa League play-off tie. The Portuguese club are unwilling to weaken their squad ahead of this crucial European fixture, which determines entry into the group stage of the competition.
Romano indicates that the formal signing of contracts and registration of the transfer is likely “from the end of this week onwards,” once Benfica’s immediate competitive obligations are satisfied.
Silva has established himself as one of Portugal’s most promising defensive prospects during his development at the Estádio da Luz. His departure would mark another significant sale for Benfica’s talent production line, while Bournemouth would secure a young centre-back with international potential as they continue to strengthen their squad for the demands of the Premier League season.
