Record fee agreed for Sangaré
Brentford have reached an agreement in principle with Lens to sign defensive midfielder Mamadou Sangaré for €48 million. The understanding was reached last night following weeks of discreet negotiations between the two clubs, though a few technical details still require finalisation before the transfer can be formally completed.
The fee would establish a new club-record for the Premier League side, surpassing the €42m they paid to Bournemouth for winger Dango Ouattara. For Lens, it would represent their largest-ever sale, eclipsing the €40m they received from RB Leipzig for striker Loïs Openda three seasons ago. The deal marks a remarkable piece of business for the French club, who stand to make a significant profit on the €8m they invested to sign him from Austrian side Rapid Wien just twelve months prior.
Rapid rise from Austria
The 24-year-old Malian international arrived at Lens in the summer of 2024, joining from Rapid Wien for a modest €8m fee. During his single season in French football, he proved instrumental in helping Les Sang et Or qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage and secure their maiden Coupe de France title.
His performances in the heart of midfield attracted significant attention from England, prompting Brentford to move decisively to secure his signature ahead of rival interest. Sangaré has already withdrawn from first-team activities to facilitate the transfer. He sat out Lens’ recent friendly fixtures at the Como Cup as negotiations entered their final stages, indicating an official announcement may be imminent once the remaining formalities are concluded.
Midfield overhaul
The impending arrival of Sangaré coincides with significant restructuring in Brentford’s engine room. The club are expected to part ways with experienced England international Jordan Henderson, who is reportedly bound for Chelsea.
Should the deal cross the line, Sangaré would fill the defensive midfield vacancy left by Henderson’s anticipated departure. His displays in Ligue 1 have demonstrated the tactical discipline, ball-winning ability and physical attributes required to adapt to the demands of English football, justifying the substantial financial outlay for a player who has already shown he can perform at the highest European level.
Both clubs now work to resolve the final contractual elements, with the player seemingly eager to complete his switch to West London and link up with manager Keith Andrews’ squad ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
