Borussia Dortmund coach Niko Kovač has publicly backed new loan signing Ethan Nwaneri, expressing high expectations for the 19-year-old midfielder who joined the club from Arsenal on deadline day.

Nwaneri’s arrival at Dortmund was a direct response to the unfortunate injury suffered by Giannis Konstantelias, who sustained a torn cruciate ligament. Kovač confirmed that the club had previously attempted to sign Nwaneri last year, indicating a long-standing interest in the young talent.

Kovač’s Confidence in Nwaneri

Speaking after Dortmund’s 5-0 victory over HEBC Hamburg in the DFB-Pokal, Kovač highlighted the qualities Nwaneri brings to the squad. The coach explained that the deadline day move was necessary after Konstantelias’ injury, noting that a previous attempt to sign Nwaneri last year had not materialised.

The Dortmund coach outlined the specific attributes the club sought in a replacement player. He explained that they were looking for someone strong in one-on-one situations, quick, and adept at dribbling. These characteristics align with Nwaneri’s profile, suggesting he is expected to fill a crucial role in the team’s attacking setup.

Kovač conveyed strong confidence in Nwaneri’s ability to adapt and perform. He stated that Dortmund had brought in a very good young player for the season and expressed his hope and conviction that Nwaneri would fulfil all the expectations placed upon him.

Nwaneri, at 19 years old, now faces the challenge of integrating into the Bundesliga side and living up to the high hopes placed upon him by the coaching staff and the club.
