AC Milan stand at a crossroads. The Italian club faces a major power struggle behind the scenes. Three different figures could take control. These are CEO Giorgio Furlani, special advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and former director Adriano Galliani. However, one man will definitely leave. Sporting director Igli Tare faces the sack in every scenario.
The crisis follows a major financial move. RedBird Capital chief Gerry Cardinale has refinanced the loan he used to buy the club from Elliott Management. He has now repaid this money. This reduces Elliott’s power on the board. Furlani represents Elliott’s interests. So his position has grown weaker.
Tensions are high between senior figures. Ibrahimovic and coach Max Allegri do not see eye to eye. Furlani and Tare are also in conflict.
There are three possible futures for the Rossoneri.
Option one puts Furlani in full charge. He would fire Allegri. He would then appoint Bologna boss Vincenzo Italiano as manager. Atalanta sporting director Tony D’Amico would also join.
Option two gives Ibrahimovic more authority. He would work closely with chief scout Geoffrey Moncada. Allegri would again lose his job. The Swede wants to recruit Fiorentina director Fabio Paratici. But this deal looks difficult.
Option three is the most surprising. Cardinale could wipe the slate clean. He would replace Furlani with Galliani. The 81-year-old ran the club during the Berlusconi era from 1986 to 2017. He recently left Monza after Berlusconi’s death. This plan would save Allegri’s job. Former Sassuolo director Giovanni Rossi would become the new sporting chief.
