Football often brings people together. However, for Iranian supporters in Los Angeles, the beautiful game provided only a brief pause from serious political tensions.

The Iranian national team faced New Zealand on Monday evening. The match finished in a 2-2 draw. For ninety minutes, thousands of fans inside the stadium forgot their differences. They cheered as one when Iran scored. But before and after the final whistle, deep divisions remained obvious.

Los Angeles hosts the largest Iranian population in America. Outside the stadium, fans showed their political views through their clothing. Some wore shirts bearing the lion-and-sun flag from before the 1979 revolution. Others displayed the current flag of the Islamic Republic. Some supporters covered the flag symbols completely or chose neutral clothing.

Protesters gathered near the stadium entrances. One person used a megaphone to claim the football team supports terrorists. Another group waved old Iranian flags alongside banners combining American and Israeli symbols. Small scuffles broke out between rival groups.

The Iranian team faced difficulties even before kick-off. American officials refused entry visas for eleven members of their delegation. This group included the federation president and media staff. The officials stated this measure prevents terrorists from entering the country. Consequently, the squad must stay in Tijuana, Mexico, and travel across the border for each match.

Captain Mehdi Taremi spoke about these challenges. He said political tension ruins the joy of the World Cup. He explained that the players simply want to focus on their football.

Inside the stadium, the atmosphere changed dramatically. Many fans booed during the Iranian national anthem. However, when Ramin Rezaiean scored the opening goal, everyone roared together. Rezaiean also created the second goal for Mohammad Mohebi with a perfect cross. He received the man-of-the-match award.

Rezaiean spoke to reporters after the game. He said Iranian people have internal problems to solve. He stated this is private business for Iranians alone.

Following the match, officials told the team they must return to Tijuana immediately. They could not remain in Los Angeles as planned. Head coach Amir Ghalenoei said these obstacles make life difficult, but the team will continue fighting.

Iran needs positive results to reach the knockout stage for the first time in their history. This draw keeps their hopes alive, but they must win their remaining games. For now, the players must concentrate on football while political issues continue to create problems around them.
